Spiritual Reality: The Existence of God

“Being Christian, I would define it [religion] as personal relationship with Christ.” “Religion [is]: God, Christ, and Holy Ghost and their meaning to each individual.” Other students think of worship rather than belief. In this vein, one edition of Webster’s dictionary, in the first of its definitions, describes religion as “the service and adoration of God or a god as expressed in forms of worship.” If we were to accept any of the above definitions, many people in the world would be excluded—people who regard some of their most important activities as religious, but who do not focus upon a deity. That is to say, not all religions are theistic,” (Chaffee, p. 315).

In Christianity, God is the eternal being that created heaven and earth. As Christians we believe God can be both transcendent and immanent. However, Christian teachings of the immanence and involvement of God, and his love for humanity, exclude the belief that God is of the same substance as the created universe. According to philosopher Descartes, he believed that God served more as a metaphysical function than a spiritual one. With that being said, most people tend to question the spiritual reality of God which leaves them thinking, whether God is real or fake. Derived from the Metaphysics, Metaphysical is “defined as the branch of philosophy that examines the nature of reality, including the relationship between mind and matter, substance and attribute, fact and value,” (Inc, 2004).

In the religion of Christianity, the Bible plays a very important role and it’s also the sacred book of history. The Bible is used as a guiding tool to the role of Christian discipleship. As Christians, we believe that God created the heaven and the earth. While other people from different religions and beliefs may ask why? We as Christians use the Bible to give proof of our beliefs, for example, in the book of Genesis chapter 1 verse 1-2, it says and I quote “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters,” (James, 2012, p. 3).  Christians also believe that Jesus Christ created mankind which includes woman and man. This can be proven in Genesis chapter 1 verse 26-27, which says and I quote “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them,” (James, 2012, p. 3).
